Thursday, August 17,
4-7 pm: Open Class Entry Arrival (Buildings Closed to Public)

Friday, August 18,
9 am-12:45 pm: Open Class Entry Arrival (Buildings Closed to Public)
1 pm Open Class Judging (Buildings Closed to Public)

Saturday, August 19- Saturday, August 26
12 pm- 8 pm Open Class Exhibits Open to the Public

The Open Class exhibits are open to everyone in Rapid City and the Black Hills Communities regardless of age. The Open Class exhibits allows fair-goers the chance to display their talents in the arts as people can participate in 22 different divisions at the fair. Divisions range from horticulture, culinary to art work and needlework.
All exhibits are entered in Thursday night from 4 pm to 7 pm and Friday morning from 9 am to noon. Each division is judged by a qualified judge and awarded a ribbon; blue, red, white or a participation ribbon. To enter, Participants should read through the open class rules and regulations (available the end of May). Entry tag is required on all pieces submitted, tags are available at the fair office or located at the division check in areas. All participants should request an Open Class number, also available at the Central States Fair office or at the Division Check-In areas.
The Central States Fair believe in celebrating those who invest in the arts and hobbies industry. In return, the Central States Fair, Inc then awards premium money to the participants in the amount of $3 for blue ribbon winners, $2 for red ribbon winners and $1 for white ribbon winner. (Money is dispersed Sunday, August 27th till September 8th). Cost to enter an item into the fair open class division is free to the public.
Each year the Central States Fair awards an estimated $15,000 in cash and prizes to those who participate in the Open Class divisions.
Open Class books will be available at the end of the May. They will be available online or at businesses in Rapid City that support the Open Class divisions.
