What began as an annual Range Days Rodeo transitioned in 1946 to become what is now known at the Central States Fair. This annual event celebrates cultural heritage, entertainment and family activities for our Black Hills community. Held each August, the Central States Fair continues to be the climax of summer and a great gathering where the city meets the country.
The Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo was formed by the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee in 1958 as the Black Hills Winter Show. The first show was held at the Pennington County Fairgrounds in 1959 with Black Hills cattlemen showcasing three breeds of cattle. Today, the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo is produced by the Central States Fair and is Rapid City’s largest event featuring 10 breeds of cattle and a variety of activities which attract over 300,000 people each year.
