Black Hills Stock Show Offers First Time Quilt Show

A nationally known quilter from Mission will be among the featured exhibitors and instructors at the first-ever quilt show at the Black Hills Stock Show.

Vi Colombe, who has been featured on PBS and in the national Quilters Newsletter, will hold a trunk show at 1 p.m. on the opening day of the Denim and Diamonds Quilt Show, on Friday, Jan. 30, in Room 205 of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, upstairs above the ticket office.

Colombe, a noted maker of star quilts, also will teach a class from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Room 206.Colombe has been sewing since she was a young woman and has been quilting since 1998, according to a web site for the Dakotah Prairie Museum in Aberdeen, which has shown her work. She has had a quilt in the Hoffman collection, which travels the United States, and one of Colombe’s quilts is displayed at Crazy Horse Memorial.The quilt show at the stock show will run 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. from Jan. 30 through Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Quilting fans will be able to see some of the top quilts in the region on display, attend quilting classes, watch trunk shows, and enjoy coffee/teas.

They can even get free rides to be pampered with manicures and massages.Quilts will be displayed in Rooms 201 and 202.Trunk shows start at 1 p.m. each day in Room 205. Other than Colombe’s class, the daily classes run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 206.

The remaining schedule of trunk shows and classes includes:

Saturday--Quilts from Harding County and southwestern North Dakota. The coffee/tea is sponsored by Jenner Equipment.

Sunday--Quilts from Wyoming with featured quilter Patty Knotts of Gillette. The coffee/tea is sponsored by Pioneer Bank & Trust.Class will be “Strips and Curves” by Michelle Dennis.

Monday--Quilts from the Rapid City Quilt Guild. The coffee/tea is sponsored by KOTA.

Class will be “Totes by Sandy.”Tuesday--Quilts from the Faith Quilt Guild. Coffee/tea sponsored by Quilt Connection Etc., Inc.Class will be taught by Joan Kettlewell, co-owner of the Quilt Connection, Etc. of Rapid City.

Black Hills Stock Show general manager Ron Jeffries said the quilt show is one of several moves aimed at attracting people who might not otherwise come to the stock show.

The quilt show will provide something free and fun for women at the stock show, said Kettlewell, coordinator of the quilt show. “It’s relaxing and fun. I think it’s going to be a fabulous show,” Kettlewell said.

“You’re going to see all kinds of appliqués, pieced quilts and art quilts.”The Quilt Connection Etc. and Husqvarna Viking are supplying the sewing machines for the classes.

Free shuttle service will be offered to The Factory salon in Rapid City for manicures, pedicures, massages and hair styling. The Factory owners Dennis and Chelly Halterman also will offer discount coupons.

Kettlewell is also making a 2009 Black Hills Stock Show commerative quilt to be auctioned off at the Western Art Show Auction on Saturday, Feb. 7, in the civic center theater lobby. The Quilt will be unveiled on Friday, Jan. 30th at 6:00 pm.

The show will be receiving quilts for display on Thursday morning, Jan. 29. They will be judged by Rebecca Smith and Michelle Dennis of the Black Hills Quilt Guild.
